Diabetes is a life-changing disease that affects your body’s ability to use or produce insulin. It also affects many areas of your body, including your eyes. Those with diabetes have an increased chance of developing serious eye diseases that can impact their vision. It is recommended to have your eyes checked at least once a year if you have diabetes.

Diabetic Eye Diseases

Those with diabetes are at a higher risk than others of developing a variety of eye diseases, including cataracts and glaucoma. However, there two serious eye diseases that develop because of diabetes:

Diabetic Retinopathy: High blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in your retinas. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can lead to blindness and diabetic macular edema.
Diabetic Macular Edema: Fluid accumulates and starts to leak into the macula, causing irreparable damage. This destroys your central vision, the area responsible for recognizing faces, reading, and driving.

Testing For These Diseases

Your annual exam will begin with the regular vision checks for visual acuity, periphery, and depth perception. Your optometrist will test how your eyes function independently and as a team. From there, your optometrist will investigate the health of your eyes using advanced optometric equipment.

Fundus Photography

The fundus refers to the inside or back of the eye. Fundus photography is done using a highly specialized digital camera focused on the central retina of your eye. In this image, your optometrist can see your retina and retinal blood vessels, optic nerve, and macula. This image remains on file as a reference for future visits to our clinic so we can monitor for changes over time.

Ocular Coherence Tomography

Ocular coherence tomography (OCT) scans help our team examine your retina for signs of diseases like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy. OCTs create cross-sectional images of your retina using a technique that is similar to an ultrasound, but instead of sound they use light.
